What can you do to make a good construction contractor choice?

On Behalf of | Dec 26, 2018 | Construction |

When you have something that you want to have built on your home or on your property, it is important to make sure you find the right construction team. The right contractor will have a license and be able to support a history of good work with references.

There are some questions you should ask construction teams before you get started on a new project. Even if the cost sounds fair, there are other things to know before you let them begin.

1. Get to know the timeline

One important thing to find out is how long the construction will take. Your contractor should be able to give you a timeline, and you should be able to negotiate for changes to that timeline. You should also be able to add clauses to your contract to make sure there are consequences for failing to meet deadlines.

2. Get the contractor’s license number and insurance policy ID

Don’t just ask about the license or insurance; make sure you check them. Call the insurance company or go online and verify the license number. There have been instances where contractors have had this information stolen by others, just as there are times when people lie about their insurance. Do your due diligence and research before hiring anyone.

It can be hard to know who you should work with, but remember that verifying who the contractor is, getting references and checking the individual or team’s ID and licensing will help you make a good decision. If there are issues that come up, you can provide this information to your attorney to work toward a resolution.
