What are some common concrete problems?

As a business owner, you know that things don't always go as planned -- and that can also happen when you're working with a contractor on your building. Concrete problems are particularly common.

A good contractor will be able to recognize, and correct, these issues to make sure your building is safe. Here are three common issues to look for.

1. Cracks on the concrete's surface

Cracks on the surface of concrete are known as crazing when they are small and full-on cracks when larger. Concrete cracks easily, but it is usually controllable. Adding more concrete and curing it correctly fills in the voids. For structural damage, further assistance might be needed.

2. Crumbling concrete

Concrete usually crumbles due to incorrect curing. Structural integrity is important, so if it hasn't cured right, a contractor needs to come back and repair it.

3. Scaling

Scaling also occurs when there is poor curing or a lack of strength in the concrete. With scaling, concrete begins to peel off and break away. If you see signs of this, it's time to get in touch with the construction team.

As you can see, most of these issues with concrete are a result of poor curing. Some can be fixed and repaired, while other jobs need to be completely redone. That's often where a conflict can arise, as you try to negotiate with the builder regarding how to handle the issue, time frames and more.

If you're in a dispute with a contractor over problems with your building's concrete and how to handle the work going forward, it's worth discussing the issues with an attorney as you decide how best to proceed.
